Knights can’t keep up with Vikings | Football

September 13, 2017

Kamiak scored the first and the last touchdown in its non-conference football game against Oak Harbor.

Unfortunately the Knights struggled in between those two scores, losing 48-14 to the Wildcats Friday, Sept. 8, at Oak Harbor High School.

“Oak Harbor is a fine team,” Kamiak coach Dan Mack said. “They have a lot of team speed. We had a hard time matching their speed at times.”

Kamiak started out strong. The defense produced a turnover when Bryce Cote forced an Oak Harbor fumble that was recovered by Kamiak. Junior quarterback Matt Merk then scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to give Kamiak (1-1) an early 7-0 lead.

“We started off great,” Mack said.

Oak Harbor’s Mac Nuanez ran for a 1-yard TD to tie the score at 7. Kyle Nickols then picked off a Kamiak pass and returned it 65 yards for a score.

In the second quarter, quarterback TJ Hollins-Passmore scored on a 35-yard run and Andrew Miller added a 2-yard TD run.

Hollins-Passmore ran 5 yards for a touchdown and threw an 18-yard pass to Nickols in the third quarter. Teammate Taeson Hardin then scored on a 47-yard run.

Xavier Henshaw ran 15 yards for Kamiak’s other touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Kamiak was outgained 417 to 193 yards in total offense. Knights senior running back Ben Barton accounted for 110 yards on 19 carries. The passing attack still has yet to produce the yardage the Knights expect.

“We need to get the throwing game going and once we get that rolling we’ll be OK,” Mack said.

The Knights face a tough league opener at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 15, against Monroe at Goddard Stadium.

The Bearcats dismantled Meadowdale 62-21 and beat Sedro-Woolley 36-7 in their two games.

“We get some players back who we’re excited about,” Mack said. “Losing the game on Friday didn’t affect our playoff aspirations. Everyone on the team is doing their due diligence preparing for Monroe.”
