New book brings Pioneer Cemetery to life

Margaret Robe Summit stands in Pioneer Cemetery among headstones Monday, Aug. 14. Her research is the basis of a new booklet on the lives of those buried in the Mukilteo cemetery. It’s available for purchase through the Mukilteo Historical Society. Visitors of Mukilteo’s Pioneer Cemetery initially find themselves basking in the site’s serenity, tucked into a quiet residential neighborhood atop a steep bluff overlooking Possession Sound and Whidbey Island.

Inevitably, though, they begin to wander from headstone to headstone, wondering about the lives of the people buried below their feet. Margaret Robe Summit wondered the same thing when she first visited the cemetery in 2010.
