Jet City Rollergirls invites newcomers to open house

Last updated 7/19/2017 at Noon

Jet City Rollergirls is hosting an open house in order to give people an opportunity to learn about and sign up for roller derby.

The event is scheduled for 9-10 p.m., Thursday, July 20, at the Everett Skate Deck, located at 9700 19th Ave. SE in Everett.

The open house will start with introductions from some of the skaters.

“A few of us will give a brief description of who we are in derby and who we are in ‘real life,’ said Karee Jo Jewett, who is in charge of the upcoming open house. “This helps to show that we are from all walks of life and that derby people aren’t really a ‘type’ on our own.”

Jewett skates under the name Terror FaceOff.

After introductions, there will be scrimmages, which are mock bouts.

During all of this, league members will be walking around to answer questions. There will also be a sign-up sheet for anyone who is interested in attending skater practices.

Everyone is welcome to come to the open house and learn more about the sport. People under the age of 18 are able to participate in junior derby.

“Junior derby is awesome, and when kids get involved and age out of juniors, we welcome them with open arms,” Jewett said.

The organization’s basic skating lessons are open to anyone over the age of 18, then the cadets and home teams are open to women over 18.

Jet City Rollergirls is Snohomish County’s only all-female, flat-track derby league. They have four home teams and one travel team, the Jet City Bombers, and they are constantly recruiting.

“Currently Jet City has about 45 skaters (not including referees and inactive skaters) and we are looking to grow to 80 or more,” Jewett said.

Jet City Rollergirls holds open houses every few months. Jewett said. “We want more people to know and understand who we are and what we do.”
