The Mukilteo Wildlife Habitat Project's free talk, which had been set for 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at the Rosehill Community Center, has been canceled.

The speaker – Diana Goodrich, co-director of the Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest in Cle Elum – is unable to cross Snoqualmie Pass, which has been closed due to weather conditions.

Goodrich's talk will likely be rescheduled. Check the Mukilteo Wildlife Habitat Project's website – – for updates.

Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest is home to the “Cle Elum Seven” – chimpanzees that were previously owned by a biomedical research lab where they were housed in a windowless basement and used for hepatitis vaccine safety trials and for breeding.

The talk is made possible thanks to a co-sponsorship grant from the city of Mukilteo.

The project has brought speakers to Mukilteo with help from the city’s grant program since 2014. Those speakers include Howard Garrett, co-founder of Orca Network,

Dr. John Marzluff, Professor at the University of Washington, and Eric Lee-Mader, co-director at the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation.

The grant program, which began in 2011 and allows for free use of city facilities, has supported events such as the Mukilteo Farmers Market, Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival, Holiday Art Mart, Garden and Quilt Tour.

The sanctuary, located on 68 acres of rural land in Cle Elum, provides lifetime quality care for the abused and exploited chimpanzees.

Goodrich will talk about the histories and personalities of the chimpanzees, the sanctuary history, the chimps indoor and outdoor habitat, the status of the chimpanzees in captivity (and wild) and the future of the sanctuary.

The “Cle Elum Seven” include Annie, a curious chimp whose best friend is Missy.

Burrito is the youngest chimp and the only male. He loves food and gets excited whenever there is any around.

Foxie is curious and watchful. She almost always carries a favorite troll doll. Jamie is extremely intelligent and has a deep love for cowboy boots. Jody loves blankets and uses as many as possible to make a nest.

Missy likes to play games of Tug of War, and she and Annie play and relax together. Negra is the Queen. She loves sheets and blankets and covers herself with them.

The sanctuary, which relies on donations rather than government funding, will accept donations during the presentation.
