Mukilteo is strong: We will overcome | Letter

Editor, The Beacon:

This is an open letter to the Mukilteo community:

We witnessed a terrible tragedy Saturday morning [“Mukilteo mourns loss of 3 Kamiak grads,” front page, Aug. 3]. What we have read about happening to others has happened to us.

In the midst of tragedy, we have many examples of people going above and beyond to help others.

Law enforcement and fire personnel running into the unknown. Neighbors helping neighbors and strangers. Churches opening their hearts and doors in time of need. Businesses providing their resources to sustain the victims and responders through the day. The community coming together to share memories, tears and hope.

I have been in this community for 16 months and, from day one, I have been impressed by how much you care for each other. Saturday reinforced that impression. This is a fantastic community, and we will overcome!

Many victims were created by Saturday’s events. Look out for each other. There will be some who are overwhelmed by the tragedy. They will continue to feel overwhelmed even after it seems everyone around them has moved on.

Self-inflicted loss as a result of Saturday’s event is possible, even in a community that cares so much. Help is available 24/7 for anyone needing assistance. If you need help, please reach out!

Volunteers of America has a crisis hotline with trained mental health professionals who are available to talk 24/7. Their hotline is 800-584-3578, and they have an online chat option on their website at

The legal process will move along, sometimes frustratingly slow, but it is necessary. I encourage everyone to let the process work.

Violence creates victims, and more violence only creates more victims, not resolutions.

Please take care of each other. Let us know if the Mukilteo Fire Department can do anything to help.

Chris Alexander

Fire Chief,

Mukilteo Fire Department
