Vote with me for school district levy | Letter

January 20, 2016

Editor, The Beacon:

Educators, families and children in our district are extremely fortunate to live and work in a community that champions its schools. We owe a big part of that to our supportive voters.

As the Mukilteo Education Association president, I represent the 938 educators in our district as their elected union leader. I collaborate with all district departments, and I work with the teachers, specialists and administrators of all 18 schools.

Therefore, I am acutely aware of maintenance and replacement needs across the district. A fundamental value of MEA is to keep our buildings secure, safe and well-maintained for our staff and students.

For this reason, I am encouraging our voters to vote “Yes” on the Capital Projects Levy on Feb. 9 [“Levy renewal to appear on February ballot,” Mukilteo Schools, page 8, Jan. 13].

The Capital Projects Levy would provide needed funding to maintain and modernize school buildings, improve playgrounds and HVAC systems, update security systems, replace boilers and update plumbing, and improve classroom technology.

And, if approved by voters, the new levy would not increase property taxes; our tax rate will be the same or lower than the existing levy.

Mukilteo School District citizens have always been supportive of our district, and we hope they will continue to support us, the teachers and students. I urge you to vote “Yes” on Feb. 9!

Thank you,

Dana Wiebe,

President,

Mukilteo Education Association
