A former Mukilteo Beacon intern has an internship this summer at The Washington Post.

LaVendrick Smith, a Mariner High School graduate, interned with The Beacon in high school from 2011-2012.

He will spend the summer reporting in The Post’s metro section as part of its summer internship program in Washington, D.C.

“It was so surreal,” Smith said. “It’s one of the biggest newspapers in the country, so hearing I got it was so surreal. It’s a big honor.”

As an intern for the Mukilteo Beacon, Smith reported on local events, such as the Meow in Mukilteo cat adoption and the three-day waterfront Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival.

“The Beacon has been such an important part to my development and growth as a journalist,” Smith said.

Since leaving The Beacon, Smith has studied journalism at the University of Washington, where he is a senior. He expects to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in March.

While at the UW, he has been a reporter and held editorial positions at the university’s student newspaper, The Daily.

Smith has also served as a features reporting intern for The Seattle Times, and last year, was a legislative reporting intern for The Tacoma News Tribune, covering legislative issues at the state capital in Olympia.

He said he’s excited to get started at The Washington Post, and looks forward to starting a career in journalism after college.

Smith said he has always wanted to be a journalist, and still has the same passion for journalism that he had at Mariner.

“Journalism is my passion,” Smith said. “I look forward to seeing what happens in the future.”
