Resident of 25 years to run for Mukilteo City Council

Max Chen

A resident of Mukilteo for 25 years is running for City Council to serve the community he calls home.

Maxwell “Max” Chen is seeking election to Council Position No. 6, held by Linda Grafer. She has served on the City Council since 2008. She has decided to retire from her seat.

Chen describes himself as a “home-grown resident” of Mukilteo who is ready to be a leader.

“I’m off to a great start,” Chen said. “I’m doing my homework on city programs, projects and budgets.”

His campaign is about providing Mukilteo residents with a better-connected community. He said he is focusing on the Japanese Gulch Master Plan, the threat of Paine Field commercial expansion and waterfront redevelopment – such as the ferry relocation, a potential parking garage and NOAA’s new research station.

“As a citizen who grew up here, I love the city and want to see it as a place where current and future generations can thrive,” Chen said. “I believe I bring a different perspective to the council dialog, bridging youth and adults of all ages together where everyone has a voice to be heard.”

Chen is a graduate of Kamiak High School and is currently studying bioengineering at Edmonds Community College. He plans to transfer to a university to pursue a master’s degree in public administration or education.

At EdCC, Chen has served on a variety of college committees, task forces and councils to help better the community college, including the EdCC Executive Board.

He has worked closely with the Edmonds Community College Board of Trustees and recently attended the Student Legislative Voice Academy in Vancouver, Wash.

He currently serves as president of the Project Home Association, a student club that supports homeless students at EdCC.

As a student, he said he has developed leadership skills with an emphasis on transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, diversity, equity, sustainability and life-long learning.
