Kamiak basketball player brings crowd to its feet

Christina Chico celebrates with her dad at the end of her final game of basketball.

Landing a three-point shot is usually enough to get the crowd to its feet, but when Kamiak High School senior Christina Chico made her three-pointer during the most recent game against Mariner, the crowd went wild.

Chico, a student in the Functional Academic Life Skills program, was thrilled enough just to be suited up with the varsity basketball team and be a starter for the last home game. Even she couldn’t imagine what would happen that night during the game, head coach Brian Norman said.

The last home game of the year is also Senior Night, a special time where staff and students recognize senior basketball players for their dedication and commitment to the sport and to the team.

Chico has been a member of the Kamiak girls basketball program during her years at Kamiak. She has helped as a manager for the team and has played on the C-team her junior and now senior year.

At one point in the game, Chico was fouled by one of the Mariner players, which meant that she had an opportunity to make a foul shot, which she did as the crowd cheered.

Later, Chico launched a three-point shot and made it, causing the place to erupt in cheers.

The energy from the rest of the team, parents and students, was very heartwarming and prompted them to go crazy with excitement, followed by the chant, “Christina, Christina, Christina!”

“We are all very proud of not only Christina, but of all the seniors, parents and the student body in attendance,” Norman said. “This experience truly showed how supportive and inclusive the Kamiak community really is.”
