Purim: Not your typical Jewish holiday | Worship

Purim is one of the more unusual holidays on the Jewish calendar.

It is based on the story in the Book of Esther in which Esther, a Jew who has been made Queen of Persia, and her cousin Mordechai foil the plot of Haman, the King of Persia’s evil prime minister, to exterminate the Jews.

Purim is celebrated with a public reading of the “Megillah,” a common name for the Book of Esther. (Megillah merely means scroll.)

The Purim story is somewhat similar to Hanukkah’s in which the plans of those in power to wipe out the Jewish people are ultimately thwarted.
