A dire situation faced Jewish people in the Land of Israel in the year 167 B.C.E.

They faced extinction because their Syrian Greek occupiers tried to impose a foreign Hellenistic culture on them by banning all Jewish practices and defiling their most sacred place – the Temple in Jerusalem.

If the Syrian Greeks had succeeded and forced the assimilation of the Jews, then who knows what today’s world might look like.

Hanukkah, which starts at sunset on Dec. 16, commemorates the Jews’ successful resistance against forced assimilation.
