Re-examining the spiritual trauma of suicide | Worship

In the last 25 years of ministry, there were several times when I presided at the funerals of people who had committed suicide. Those times have been among the most difficult and painful experiences of my life.

My heart breaks for those left behind. I see their pain, loss, confusion and soul numbing sadness. It is excruciating.

I watch as friends and loved ones circle around the bereaved. They feel compassion, but they also feel awkward.

No one seems to know what to say. No one quite knows how to interpret the self-destructive act or the consequences of that act. They don’t want to say...
