Mariner High School is bringing an abridged version of “Anne of Green Gables” to the stage. A rather good version, in fact.

Though, of course, it’s no replacement for the original miniseries or book. There will never be a trio to replace Megan Follows, Colleen Dewhurst and Richard Farnsworth.

The show is shortened two and a half hours while still remaining faithful to the tone of the story.

Just incase you don’t know the book or the miniseries by heart: Anne is an orphan living in Canada at the turn of the century. She’s been lent out as an extra set of hands for families with many children.

She is very smart and has a wonderful imagination. If only she could get some proper care and education, her future would look bright. Her luck changes when an elderly brother and sister decide to adopt a child to help with the work on the farm they share.

The only problem is that they sent for a boy. When Anne is sent by mistake, there is a problem. Since boys are more equipped to handle the hard outside work, Marilla is not in favor of keeping her. Matthew, on the other hand, adores her immediately.

After much debate, Anne gains a home at Green Gables.

The play covers three or four years in her life, as Anne gets into trouble, finds redemption and eventually prospers.

She makes friends out of potential enemies, such as Rachel Lynde the town gossip, Diana’s great aunt, and Gilbert Blythe who makes the mistake of insulting Anne’s red hair.

The performances are quite pleasing. Sarah Anderson and Jessica Johnson share the title role. They are enormously sympathetic and show that intelligence isn’t something to be squandered.

Marilla is all about hard work and isn’t terribly sentimental, but is kind. She is played with great strength and integrity by Kodie Gadley.

Zach Steen plays Matthew, with a good heart and a shy demeanor.

Caylie Parker plays Anne’s best friend Diana Barry. She has some hilarious scenes – particularly when Anne makes a mistake with the liquid refreshment!

Anne’s potential boyfriend and archenemy Gilbert Blythe is played by both Nathan Viands and Derrick Collier. They make for effective sparring partners with Anne.

Sonia Munguia plays the chatty and overly critical Rachel Lynde. She has a lot of fun with her small part, as she almost costs Anne her home.

There are also some nice supporting performances by 12 other students who play the town folk.

This is a fine peace of work about the balance in life, following your dreams and working for them. Don’t miss this one.

“Anne of Green Gables” is playing at 7 p.m. on Nov. 8-10 and 15-17, at Mariner High School, 200 120th St. S.W. in south Everett. Tickets are sold at the door.
