SSCD swimmers shine

Three South Snohomish County Dolphins (SSCD) swimmers turned in outstanding individual performances at the NW Section Western Zone 2010 Short Course Age Group Championships held at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way March 19-21.


This annual meet brought together 1317 top swimmers, ages 9 to 18,  representing 141 competitive swim clubs from Washington, Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Wyoming, Northern Nevada and Western Nebraska.


Chris Choi, 17, earned an individual medal with a second place finish in the finals of the 200-yard breaststroke with a personal best time of 2:16.56.

Choi’s time moves him into 10th place on the SSCD all time all stars records for 17-18 year old boys. His performance also qualifies for the Western Zone Championships in San Jose this August.

Choi swam the 200-yard individual medley to an 11th place finish with a time of 2:06.59 and a 44th place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a 51.89 time.




Laura Johnson, 14, raced to an 11th place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a personal best time of 2:18.00.

Johnson finished 15th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.14. Her times put her in third and sixth place on the SSCD all time all stars records for 13-14 year old girls.


In the individual medley, Johnson finished 25th in the 200-yard race with a personal best time of 2:17.21. Her time moves her into 10th place on the SSCD all time all stars. Johnson also finished 21st in the 400-yard race with a 4:55.27 time. 

In the 200-yard backstroke, Johnson finished 14th with a 2:14.46. Laura holds first place on the SSCD all time all stars in both the 200 and 100-yard backstroke events for her age, and is qualified for Western Zone Championships in both events as well.


Mitchell Hovis, 10, earned individual medals with a first place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke event with a personal best time of 1:14.83; and a secon place finish in the 50-yard breaststroke with a personal best time of 35.39. 

Hovis’s swims currently rank him seventh in the 100-yard and eighth in the 50-yard breaststroke events in the United States for the 2009-2010 Short Course (25 yard) swimming season for 10 and under boys.

His times also move him into first place on the SSCD all Ttme all stars records; and into second place on Pacific Northwest Swimming’s (PNS) top 16 times of the 21st century for his age.


In the Individual Medley, Hovis swam to a second place medal in the 200-yard event with a personal best time of 2:34.23; and a seventh place medal in the 100-yard event with a personal best time of 1:13.10. Hovis’s times moved him to fourth place and fifth place for the 200- and 100-yard events on the SSCD all time All stars records.

In the butterfly, Hovis raced to 18th place finishes in both the 50- and 100-yard events with times of 33.78 and 1:18.34.
