Last year two
students, Laura Pfeifer and Adanna Abakporo, took on a massive community
service project as an assignment for French class. They worked with the
nonprofit WaterAid to raise money for the creation of wells in the African
country Burkina Faso.
With less than 51
percent of people having access to clean water, these students were inspired to
make a difference. The enthusiasm and service of this project has now become a
school-wide NHS (National Honor Society) project. With the efforts of a greater
number of students this year, the walkers hope to exceed last total.
The walkers are
collecting donations at http://firstgiving.org/walkforwater2010 , which also includes information about the
cause.
Students will walk 7.9
miles from Mariner to Mukilteo this Saturday, March 20.
New members are
ecstatic participate in this charitable service project; even students outside
of NHS are more than willing to help.
Mariner student Kayla
Christiani, who also works at Tin Fish here in Mukilteo, puts all the tips she
earns towards this cause. “It’s awesome to help out,” she said. “It makes me
feel great; it makes me feel a part of something big.”
The support of
students has really helped this project advance and with the walk only a few
days away, students hope to raise even more awareness. The walkers will
collect donations the week after
the walk, hoping that the hype and enthusiasm of the event will bring further
support.
