After reexamining
enrollment forecasts for the 2010-11 school year and comparing those with
building capacities, the Mukilteo School District will lift an enrollment
restriction at three elementary schools next fall. Those schools are Fairmount
Elementary, Mukilteo Elementary and Serene Lake Elementary.
The school district
had announced last week that 10 schools would limit new admissions to just
those students who live within the Mukilteo School District boundary. With this
latest change, that restriction will now be in place for seven schools: Kamiak
and Mariner high schools and, Columbia, Endeavour, Horizon, Olivia Park and Picnic Point elementary schools.
Public schools are
required to accept the admission of all students, even those who live outside
of its boundaries. Schools can deny admission only if a student has had
previous behavior or attendance issues or if admitting the student will cause
the receiving school district a financial hardship, such as adding to an
already-overcrowded school.
Mukilteo School
District analyzes enrollment forecasts and building capacities from its
approved Capital Facilities Plan to determine which of its schools will not
have enough room available for out-of-district students.
