Do you have a child who will attend kindergarten in the Mukilteo School District next year? Registration for regular and all-day kindergarten classes will get underway at each neighborhood school beginning Monday, March 1.

The school offices will be open for registration from 9 to 3 each school day until Friday, June 11.

The all-day, tuition-based kindergarten sessions will be available at five schools during the 2010-11 school year, as compared to six schools this year.

All-day sessions will be available at Endeavour, Mukilteo, Odyssey, Olivia Park and Serene Lake elementary schools. The change occurred because enrollment forecasts indicate that classroom space will not be available for the all-day kindergarten program at Columbia Elementary.

Spots in the school district’s all-day, tuition-based kindergarten sessions will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis beginning March 1. Tuition for the all-day kindergarten sessions is $2,656 for the year, or $284 a month for nine months plus a $100 deposit at registration.

A limited number of scholarships are available for families that can’t afford the full fee.
Students registered for the regular half-day kindergarten program will be assigned to either a morning or afternoon session. After being shuttled to Serene Lake Elementary the past couple of years, the kindergarten students at Odyssey Elementary will remain at Odyssey next year.

Kindergarten students at Discovery Elementary, however, will continue to be shuttled to Olivia Park Elementary because of overcrowding issues.

To be eligible for next year’s kindergarten class, a child must be at least 5 years old by Aug. 31, 2010. When arriving at the school to register their child, parents should bring verification of their child’s birth date, verification of address (such as a utility bill or lease agreement), the names and telephone numbers of emergency contacts and an up-to-date record of immunizations.

The vaccines required for school attendance are established by the state of Washington. For an incoming kindergarten student, they must include four doses of DPT (the last after age 4), three doses of polio (the last after age 4), two doses of MMR (the first one after age 1), a series of three Hepatitis B immunizations and two doses of Varicella (chicken pox) after age 1.

For more information about kindergarten classes, please contact the elementary school in your neighborhood or call the school district’s Elementary Education office, (425) 356-1209. Additional information also is available on the school district’s Web site at www.mukilteo.wednet.edu.
