Kamiak senior Lauren Luke recently won a $1,000 scholarship from Inspireum Soccer.
Lauren Luke, a Kamiak High School was recently named one of 12 national finalists for the Inspireum Soccer Awards, which celebrate inspirational young athletes who embody the values of character, courage, contribution, and commitment through the sport of soccer.
Lauren will receive a $1,000 academic scholarship for the inspirational impact she has made on her teammates, coaches, peers and community.
At just two years old, Lauren was removed from the home of her biological parents – literally ripped from the arms of her grandmother by Social Services.
Her parents were drug addicts who, it was determined, needlessly put the lives of their young children in danger.
Over the course of the next two years, Lauren was moved between five foster homes, until she was adopted, at the age of four, by Bill and Ethel Luke.
Since that time, Lauren has exhibited a determination not to portray herself as a victim of circumstance, and has risen above what might be expected of her given her past.
She is an exceptional soccer player and student, playing for her high school as well as the very good under-18 Washington Rush.
When asked to give a speech to the incoming freshmen at her school about bullying, she gave them some inspirational thoughts to mull over.
“Hope – what I want you to get from my story is that there is hope,” she said during her speech. “No matter how low your life gets, you can overcome anything.”
The 12 teens are recognized for the inspirational impact they have made on their teammates, coaches, peers, and communities and were chosen from more than 250 nominees throughout the nation.
Academic scholarships totaling $25,000 were provided by the Trusted Sports Foundation for those players who bring the most heart to the game of soccer.
“Each of these young soccer players is a role model and has shown so much character and courage in their pursuit of the sport and in exhibiting a passion for life that is extraordinary,” said Steve Sampson, chair of the selection committee.
“They have the ability to inspire people both on and off the field, and should be celebrated – everyone should have an opportunity to get to know the stories of these incredible young athletes.”
