Students in Nancy Fee’s 2nd grade class at Challenger Elementary have received Dr. Hope’s Act of Kindness Award in appreciation for the work they have done to spread kindness at their school.
Dr. Hope’s website, called LaughingDay.com, was designed to inspire children to believe in themselves and to teach them the joy in helping others.
Fee’s 2nd graders received the on-going Act of Kindness Award from the site because of their program, called Kids for Kindness.
The program started when four of Fee’s students noticed that a new girl in another class was wearing the same unwashed clothes for several days in a row, causing the students to become worried that she may be homeless.
Because the new girl seemed lonely and wasn’t playing with the other students at recess, the four 7-year-olds went out of their way to help the new girl find friends.
Through the Kids for Kindness project, Fee’s students now leave little notes or treats for classmates, pick up trash around the campus, send cards to staff members, and read and play games with local senior citizens.
As winners of the Act of Kindness Award, each student in the class will receive an autographed copy of Tim “Dr. Hope” Ander’s award-winning children’s book, Laughing Day.
