This year Kamiak’s debate team has done tremendously well. We won 171 trophies, sent 20 students to state, won seven state trophies (including Student of the Year), and qualified five students to Nationals and had four more as first alternates.
It is in this last category– qualifying for Nationals – that we are looking for assistance. This year Nationals is held in Kansas City Missouri from June 13-18.
The cost
of sending five students, two judges and a coach is $4500, excluding
registration expenses.(Registration is paid for with a donation from the Matt
Grindy Foundation.)
In
addition to our increased costs – we have never taken five students to
Nationals before – our school and district have had to cut back funds this year
due to the state’s economic situation.
As a
result, neither the school nor the district is assisting in the cost of
representing Kamiak at Nationals.

Derek Hanson and
Kate Lawrenz are this year’s winners of the Matt Grindy Memorial scholarship
for debate students.

The
National Forensic League has made available a page on its web site to donate
funds to help send teams to nationals. This is a tax-free donation made
to the National Forensic League; it will in turn pass any funds along to the
school that received the donation.
If you
could make a donation of any size to this cause the team would be very
grateful. (Any costs not fundraised will be paid by the participants to
nationals)
To make a donation, visit nflonline.org, click the “:raise money for nationals” link to the left, type in Washington state, then click on Kamiak.
Thank you
from the students and parents of Kamiak Debate for any donations!
