Thank you for your leadership and tireless support of Mukilteo’s efforts to reclaim our waterfront and create a vibrant business and recreation area along our beautiful Sound. The Mukilteo City Council and I are asking again for your support of our community. Please support a budget mandate to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that they include funds for design of a new, modern research facility on their current Mukilteo waterfront site in their next budget.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has operated a Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NWFSC) field research station in Mukilteo for the last 40 years. The current field station is housed in tired, military barracks that are more than 60 years old and is located on a 22-acre decommissioned Air Force Tank Farm
The Mukilteo Research Station provides the NWFSC with critical data about the lifecycle of marine species and the impacts of pollution on fish and invertebrates, and one of the longest running studies on the health of Puget Sound is based on research out of Mukilteo. The water just off the shore of Mukilteo is almost 600 feet deep and is one of the cleanest stretches in all of the Puget Sound. Scientists are able to get uncontaminated samples of fish and other sea life for study. Elementary, high school and college students all access the current facility now, and an improved facility would benefit those programs and improve access to educational opportunities.
With the increased likelihood that your bill facilitating the Tank Farm transfer may be implemented soon, I believe the time has finally come for an upgrade to this important NOAA research station.
A new NOAA facility is an integral part of a revitalized Mukilteo waterfront and the City strongly supports moving this effort forward. In addition, greater public access to the science conducted at the NOAA facility would engage the public in efforts to maintain the overall health of the Puget Sound, and would spur tourism in downtown Mukilteo.
Again, thank you for your rock steady support of Mukilteo over the past 18 years and we hope that finally the tank farm transfer you championed is within reach.
Sincerely,
Joe Marine Mayor
