Lisa Callagan, owner of the new Village Salon in Old Town, blow dries longtime client Jennifer Hanson’s hair after a cut and color on Jan. 13.
A new hair salon is open on the corner of 4th and Mukilteo Speedway.
Village Salon, independently owned and operated by Lisa Callahan, opened this month at 315 Lincoln Ave. Suite B1.
Callahan, originally from the East Coast, has been a licensed stylist for more than 30 years.
Following the footsteps of her grandfather and great-grandfather – both owners of barbershops in the 1940s and 1960s back east – she renovated her grandfather’s barbershop and opened The Village Salon and Spa in Connecticut in 1988.
“It was really quaint,” Callahan said. “I’ve been trying to keep it old-fashioned.”
Now on the West Coast, she’s cut hair locally here and there, but missed having her own salon and being her own boss.
Many in Mukilteo may remember when the location was the Neener Neener Weiner hot dog restaurant.
Callahan said she’s had her eye on the quaint, intimate space for years – “A hundred square feet might be exaggerating,” she said – and now it’s finally hers.
“I’m really excited to finally be here,” she said. “I love the little location down here. It reminds me of my hometown in Connecticut.”
She has one chair for now, but she may go up to two later. With one chair, she said customers receive her undivided attention during a private hair appointment.
“My service is really personalized, they will get the individual attention, and I love that,” Callahan said.
Her longtime clients attest to that:
“Her undivided attention makes you feel like you are something special,” said client Marcella Wise. “After an appointment with Lisa, I feel relaxed and pampered.”
“My hair looks fabulous when I leave, every single time. There are no shortcuts from the beginning to the end.”
Terry Moffat, a client for three years, agrees: “I can’t imagine going to anyone else,” she said. “I’m always getting compliments after Lisa does my cut and color.”
Callahan moved to Mukilteo in 1998 and lived here for 12 years. She sold real estate for Windermere Mukilteo for about nine years, but with the bad market, decided to get licensed in hair again.
“I was lucky to have a trade to fall back on,” she said.
She is also a professional musician – another family tradition, as her grandmother was a singer. Callahan sings and plays guitar at solo gigs or with the band Just Released (Check out the band at www.justreleased1.com).
Her guitar hangs on the wall of her salon. “If I’m not too busy, I can practice my music,” she said, adding that she’d be happy to play a song for customers, too.
Village Salon is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays, and Tuesdays and Saturdays by appointment.
