Kamiak takes 1st Place in District Dance Championship
By Nora Cheek
Each year hundreds of dance and drill teams across the country perform complex routines at local competitions, hoping to quality for their regional or district competitions. At the district level, they hope to qualify for the State competition, the most difficult of the dance/drill competitions. And if the team earns a trophy along the way, it’s a bonus.
Kamiak High School’s Dulcineas Dance Team did just that. The team performed two dances at the District 1 dance/drill championship tournament, which was held at Kamiak on Saturday March 8.
Competing against ten other schools from northwest Washington, Kamiak took 1st place in the Kick/Pom category.
Their dance, a Rockettes-style number to the song “One Night Only” from Dreamgirls, won cheers and whistles from the audience. Wearing blue sequined jumpsuits and long white gloves, the dancers repeatedly kicked over their heads in perfect unison. Congratulations to the Dulcineas! And good luck at the State championships, which will be held in Yakima on March 21.
