Food and basketball to benefit hungry

By Pat Ratliff

The Beacon

Nearly 60 Kamiak seniors will participate in the Third Annual Senior vs. Staff Basketball Game at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 28, in the Kamiak Main Gym. Proceeds from the game will be donated to help the hungry.

The game is hosted by the Kamiak National Honor Society.

Sixty seniors will be participating in the game as basketball players, cheerleaders, floor moppers, waterboys/girls, etc., and about 20 staff members will participate as well.

The record between the seniors and staff is 1-1. The seniors won in 2006, and the staff won in 2007. Both teams will be looking to take the lead in the standings this year.

In the last few years, this event has become one of the most anticipated events of the school year, and Honor Society members are expecting around 1,000 fans to attend.

In the past, the proceeds from the games’ admission fees have gone toward college scholarships.

This year, the Honor Society decided to reach out in the community and donate 100 percent of the proceeds from ticket sales to Northwest Harvest, a hunger relief organization.

They are also asking local businesses to sponsor them as well. Their ultimate goal is to raise more than $5,000.

“We would love for everyone in the community to attend the game,” said Kevin Song, president of the Kamiak National Honor Society.

Raising money and food to go with it is a main part of the activities surrounding the game.

“The Kamiak Food Drive is from March 3-28,” Song said. “We are not only asking students to bring cans of food to their 3rd period classrooms, but as in the past, we are going around in the community and asking for donations.”
