Product helps girls past awkward stage

By Laura Wilcox

The Beacon

Mukilteo resident Kathy Pickus and her sister Terri Goodwin have created a product that could change the way parents and daughters communicate.

“Our target is moms and dads,” Pickus said, “but more so moms.”

The promising product is now for sale on their website (www.dotgirlproducts.com) and at Park Avenue Salon in Mukilteo (731 - 2nd Street).

What is it?

Well … it’s called The Dot Girl™s First Period Kit, and it’s exactly what the name suggests.

The idea to create a kit for this milestone in a woman’s life came to Pickus and Goodwin two years ago.

“I put some things together for my daughter in case she was away from home when her first period started,” Pickus recalls. “I had her store it in her gym bag so she’d be prepared.”

The duo knew they wanted to start a business together, so they began production of their kit under the umbrella of TK Designs, LLC.

During product development, the two women continually heard from other women who wished they’d had more information when they underwent their first period.

The kit is designed as an interactive resource and tool to help parents discuss menstruation with their daughters.

“We want to reach as many girls as we can while developing other products under the Dot Girl ™ name,” Terri Goodwin says. “The product appeals to young girls but it’s also fun and practical. We want to support young girls. We want to increase their confidence.”

The kit is available in a pink or blue circular bag, and includes a first-period guide – a 12-page booklet with answers to common questions; a period calendar – a simple “fill in the dot” way to track your cycle; a reusable warm pad – a heating pad for soothing cramps; plus hand wipes and feminine protection samples.

It retails for $18.
